To be an officer you need a degree. It can be in underwater basket weaving or engineering, either way it is a degree. To go enlisted you just have to meet the physical requirements. If you are wanting to go to college and don't have the money, the military will pay for 100% of it while you are in. There is tuition assistance that pays and once you complete your enlistment you have your GI Bill. It pays $1075 a month for you to go to school (full time). If you pick your school right, and don't get the most expensive you should have some money left over. You can become an officer while enlisted. You can go to school while enlisted and once you have received your degree you put a package in to become an officer. Talking to a recruiter may help, they should be able to shed some more light onto this for you.

The ranks are a caste system. Officers are on top, and always in charge.
If you are the kind of person that likes to get his hands dirty and fix whatever is wrong all by yourself, then the enlisted world is for you. If you like to take charge, rally people around you and get them to pull together to get something done, then you are a candidate to be a leader, you should aim for a career as an officer. You can be a leader while enlisted but you will always have an officer over you that has less experience and gets paid more. This is universal, not limited to the USAF.
No need to go to the USAF academy, all you need to do is to either go through AFROTC (they offer scholarships) or finish your college and apply to their officer candidate school. You do need that degree before you become an officer.
In the US Army we used to say that the most dangerous weapon in the world is a second lieutenant. On his first day at work, with ZERO experience, he is put in charge of a platoon that has at the very least a half dozen seasoned noncommissioned officers.
We probably stole that saying from the Marines.

You do not need to go to the academy in order to become an officer. And that's a good thing, because it is very difficult to get into the academy: you need excellent grades, outstanding extracurricular activities, and a letter of reference from a senator or congressman.
If you do not have a four year degree, you will not be considered for Officer Candidate School (OCS). But if you enlist, they will help you pay for college (and once you finish college you can apply to OCS). You can attend the Air Force college part time while you are enlisted and they will pay for it. You can also attend college on an ROTC (Reserve Officer's Training Corps) scholarship, and then join the Air Force as an officer when you complete your degree. This is the website: http://www.afrotc.com/
Bear in mind that you need an actual HS diploma to enlist in the Air Force; a GED or equivalnecy exam won't cut it.
You should also consider the Marines. Although they have a reputation as the service for stupid people, that is an old stereotype, and no longer true. In fact the Marines may now have surpassed the Air Force as the military service for smart people, and they are receiving constant recognition from the business world for the outstanding leaders they produce. Also, the Marines have evolved into an organization that promotes individuality and the ability to think outside the box. The Wharton School of Business, which is the number 1 MBA program in the country, if not the world, sends its MBA students to the Marines for one week to be trained in leadership. See this article:

Depends on what you mean by better. Being an officer, you'll earn more money and have people working under you. But those people working under you might not really respect you unless you become an exceptional officer. Being enlisted, you'll earn less, and be following others orders. But you'll earn your respect from your fellow airmen/women.
To become an officer you need to go to college, You don't have to go to the Air Force Academy but you will need to do ROTC. My advice is to talk to an Air Force ROTC recruiter for specifics. Just remember that it is the Air Force you are joining and there is always the possibly that you will be sent to war. Don't join if you just want someone to pay for college, there are scholarships and grants out there that can do that.
To enlist all you need to do is go talk to your local Air Force recruiter. Recruiters will try their best to get you into the MOS you want but there are no guarantees. They will put you where they need you. Also, bring along someone with you. Make sure they are willing to put EVERYTHING they say and promise in writing. Some recruiters are good but there are others that will tell you anything you want to hear, just to get you to sign up. Also, if you do enlist, you will eventually have the option of becoming an officer through different military programs.
Good Luck!

You can enlist in the Air Force (good choice) as long as your ASVAB scores are high enough. Once in there and at your first duty station you can take correspondence courses on base or off base night school at a local college. Since you'd be a local person the clases should be relatively cheap. But if you get one of the AFSC's that can be worked 24/7 you may be screwed. You'll also be learning alot of stuff in a short period about the Air Foce way of life and your new job in it and how you make it all happen. So wait until you get settled into your new job and station then look into the courses then OTS. By then you may be ready for the responsiblity of the job. For a single person it's worth it.

if you haven't already applied to the Academy and are past your Junior year in High school, It's too late.
You can attend any college that has an AF ROTC program and get yoru commission that way, but the first two years are on your own dime, and then you must apply for a ROTC scholarship. if you accept the scholarship, you will be commissioned as a second lt and must serve at leat four year in the AF.
or, you can attend college, get a nice technocal degree in Math or engineering with a GPA of 3.5 or better, then apply for OTS.
or you could enlist right after high school and there are several commissioning programs that you could utilize from the enlisted ranks.

Enlisted gets treated like slaves and dirt bags. They are not respected and they get talked down on. An officer depending on his rank, gets treated with respect, they gets head of the line privileges when going to chow (meal times) They gets better uniforms than enlisted personnel. If you really wanted to go into the airforce I would highly and I do want to empathizes highly recommend going to school first, getting your degree and becoming an officer. I did 6 1/2 years as enlisted in the Navy. I know. I am considering going back in too. But take from me, go officer. The airforce will pay for you to go to college, so money will not be an issue for you.

If you cannot afford college than you will come in enlisted and then the military will pay for your school. When you get your Bachelors degree you will then apply to be a officer. If you get approved then you will go to OTS and upon graduation you will become a butter bar. There are many Officer programs out there that will help you to become a officer. Talk with a Air force recruiter and get as much information as possible. Use the Internet it will be the a very good tool to use.

Surveyor-lol-said it all. Hunny, do you know what the academy life is like?, And how hard it is to get accepted?, And how harder it is to stay?-do some research. And, spelling is definitely needing improvement! No officer is taken seriously until he/she learns proper grammar-because an officer is a leader. So why would you want to trust someone with your life, if they couldn't even spell out their position, school they attended, or planned on attending? That's sad! I have friends that attend the academies, trust me-basic grammar is definitely important to rise to the top. And with being challenged in everything you do-if you can't spell-then why even plan on going there?-you'll never make it.

Officer is always better, especially at first. Same as worker or manager in civilian life.
You can become an Air Force officer after graduation from any college provided that you meet all of the other qualifications.
