Have the party. If your family wants to bum out and not go thats their fault. Its a day to celebrate their life and play and have fun. You do what you will do and if they want to be included, GREAT. If not, consider it their loss!

What does your family consider a "party". You already said you wanted to invite some family over to celebrate your daughter's birthday. In my family, that would be considered a party. It's all about honoring your daughter on her day. NOT a reason to have a house full of strange kids running around, simply because family is nagging you to do so. Another point, once you start these "kid" parties, you are expected to continue year after year and they get bigger! Do what YOU want to do...she's your daughter. It's your home.

A family birthday party is fine at any age I think. Though you might want to hold off on having a kids birthday party until she starts school, unless she goes to pre-school she may have friends from there.
My son is turning 2 in 5 weeks, this year he is having 3 or 4 birthday parties, I know I am insane for doing this. 1 with my family, 1 with my friends and their kids, 1 with my hubby's dad's family, and 1 with hubby's mom's family a few weeks before. We do have some extenuating circumstances though, like family in the hospital so it happens with thanksgiving dinner, friends not getting along with family, family not getting along with family and not having enough room anywhere to try having everyone at for 1 big party at the same time. Last year we only had 2 parties, my family and my mother-in-law's family, I think I still spent about $50 just on the cakes and ice cream though.

Kids should have a party at any age they are never too young but being that there are no kids her age to invite then maybe just get her a cake and have a family gathering. Nothing too big but decent enough for her to remember her birthday was special.

I have a 3 year old who will be 4 tommorrow and we are getting together with family this weekend. There will be cake and ice cream and presents and I can promise you that she will call it a party. I have always done that for both of my girls. My oldest is 5 and she calls cake and presents her birthday party. Now I do buy the cutesy cake plates, maybe a balloon bouquet will be there, but I would save the real parties till they have friends they can invite. It'll be a party either way! It's your kid so tell your family they have already raised theirs or to do what they will with their own :) Good Luck!

Isn't inviting family over a birthday party?

Of course it's not necessary. Tell her she can have one next year when she is in school and has FRIENDS! My 3 daughters take turns having a big party. This year it was my 7 year old's turn. She won't have another big party till she turns 10. Next year my middle daughter will have the big party. They are all good with this, and it helps me not to go nuts or break the bank, esp. since all their birthdays are clumped close together.

Absolutely not necessary. Having a small family gathering is plenty. Do you remember your third birthday party? Neither do I. Have a family outing to the zoo or a picnic in the park. If there are other children there she can play with them.

My aunt started having parties for my neice when she turned 1! It was always just family and close friends. She is now four and next year she gets to have some friends come to her party. TO me its important to celebrate a birthday with your family. It brings everyone together!

In our family we have parties for the family. Both my children and my sister's children had parties from their first year. It's a great excuse to spend time with those you care most about.
