I have long, thick hair too. I always wash my hair in the shower. I only ever shampoo once but take time to massage the scalp. I don't use conditioner every time. I turn the tap down so it is cool for a final rinse. I comb out my hair before blow drying.
If you go to a chemist you can get something called Linco beer. This always gives a glossy finish.

I have long thick hair too, and I know it can be a huge pain. So here are some tips:
-DONT blowdry
-DO use both shampoo and conditioner
-DONT put shampoo on the ends of your hair, it will dry them out and cause them to split.
-DO condition your ends heavily, but only use a tiny size amount for the rest of your hair. If you condition the top of your head too much, your hair will get oily and slick much much faster.
-DO squeeze the water out of your hair before towel-drying.
-If you wash you hair at night, DO make sure you let it dry before you sleep on it.
-DO brush your hair in the shower/right after.

My stylist told me to wash hair twice then condition. Only need a sze of 5p each shampoo. First time it will not really lather but the second time it will. I have long curly hair and I find the Bed Head range seems to be good too.

Use water definitely (drink the beer mentioned above then you may not care about how your hair looks).
Best idea is to get some help, take someone in the shower with you, to help you wash your hair for you.

wash your hair using a shampoo for your hair type. rinse and makesure all of the shampoo is out. then use a good thick
feeling conditioner leave in for a minute then rinse and make sure its all out
afterwards dont rub your hair with a towl pat and smooth it dry from the roots downwards to help smooth the cuticles also use a wide toothed comb to detangle your hair. dont blast your hair face the hairdryer to dry your hair from the roots to the tips. blasting it will raise the cuticles.

I hear that the most important part is making sure you par a lot of attention to the scalp and not as much to the hair. make sure hair it's completely wet and do not pour shampoo right onto the hair, put it in your hands and rub together 1st. Putting too much on makes your hair weighed down and the residue stays, so ease up on the 'poo.

The best way is to comb it through before you start.
Use the best quality shampoo you can afford.
Wash hair twice.
Rinse thoroughly.
Use a good quality hair conditioner, comb it through your hair and leave it on your hair for 5 minutes.
Rinse thoroughly.
Towel dry and comb.
If you use a hair drier keep it on the lowest heat setting. High heat makes your hair frizzy.

Comb the conditioner through and after you've rinsed off the conditioner, rinse your hair quickly in cold water. This sleekens the hair.
