I had subscibed to Martha Stewarts Wedding as soon as I got engaged back in 98.
The steps shown on ehow is similar to the how to's tip I received from the magazine back in '98 except my dress is stored in a box...

(Snowflake I'm sorry but I have to disagree with you. When I got married back in '98 I used the very same design on my mothers dress and she was married in the 50's/60's era.)

Clean it and put it in a plastic bag. Any sweat or food stains that are light and not visible now will become dark if you don't clean them off. Keep it away from mosture and direct sunlight. Sorry to disappoint you, but in 20 years your dress will be severely out of style. Most brides like new dresses anyway.

A vacuum bag [ like space bags] works very well and is usually cheaper than having it done at the dry cleaners which was the traditional way to do it. You can find them at Bed Bath and Beyond and other stores like that.

you bring it to a cleaners where they will first clean it for you then they will put it in an air tight bag. when i did mine a year ago they did it so there was a door on the front of the box so you could see through and still see your dress. they do a nice job and also put it on a cardboard mannequin so it keeps its shape.

Most dry cleaners will clean and bag it for you. My wife's is in the basement (off the floor in case of flooding) after being dry cleaned, sealed and boxed by a cleaner.

There are companies that will professionally preserve your dress. It's costly but it's dry cleaned and sealed professionaly. Personally I didnt choose that route, but you may enjoy it. You could also do it yourself with a kit, but I cannot personally recommend it.http://www.gown-preservation.com/index_page0004.htm

Do NOT put it in a plastic bag. Take it to a professional dry cleaner who will clean and box it.
