Yes, it does. No, it is not like running as running is cardio and yoga is strength training. It does not burn many calories, but the muscle gained will help you burn more fat altogether.

Yes, yoga is an excellent way to tone up/shape up. But it's all in what you put in it. If you work hard you'll find it tones you up quicker. Make sure you find a good certified instructor and explain what you want to do. There are many different levels of yoga and you have to decide which one works best for you.

Hi there!

The only way to tone (revealing more muscle tone) is to shed body-fat and work the underlying muscles. The emphasis should be on the former (shed body fat).

Yoga is primarily a strengthening exercise that relaxes you, but you don't really burn a lot of calories doing it. Case in point, how often do you see people coming out if yoga drenched in sweat.

Now, if you are not really into exercise and all of a sudden start yoga, and are in a state of calorie deficit or calorie breakeven, you will notice some muscle tone. If you are in a state of calorie surplus (putting on weight), you will never see the muscle tone since it will remain covered in body fat.

In the same vein, a guy with a belly doing a 100 situps a day, would be better off doing cardio (burns more fat) and no situps if he wanted a washboard.

It seems that you are interested in losing weight / toning up. Thus, the way you do this is to keep your calories between 1500 (female) - 2000 (male) per day. Try to break up these calories into five meals to keep your energy / metabolism levels high.

Next, just stay active. If you like Yoga, do it. If you like tae bo, even better. If you keep your calories to the specified range any movement you do will burn body fat. At this state, the more movement you do, the faster you will burn the fat. You should start to see results within the week.

Lastly, you should try and find someone knowledgeable to encourage you in your weight loss program.

I believe this answers your question, but if not, you may email me.

Good luck on your diet and fitness goals!

Yoga makes you tune in with your body and also helps you become more in shape. More yoga will help you learn how to become a pretzel.
