I have two cats-male and female, both fixed. Well, I have two litter boxes, both of the cats will use one to poop in, only poop in. And then the other one they will only pee in. Is this a normal thing that cats do and if not why are my cats weird? Its kinda cook that they do it that way, but I can't figure out why.

I have one cat and one litter box and she only ever pees on one side and only ever poops on the other side. Based on this, and what other people have written, I think your either your cats are quite normal or all of our cats are quite odd.

Its actually pretty normal for them to do this. I have 3 cats and 3 litter boxes and they use 2 to poop in and 1 to pee in. So unless a lot of cats are unusual in this way I'd say it's pretty normal.

That is normal. Most cats will pick one box for each. We have 3 cats and 3 litter boxes. They only use two of them. One for pee and one for poo. The other is never used. Just a preference thing.

When you're speaking of cats, there IS no normal. All cats have their little quirks. This may be simply a territorial thing, since cats will urinate in certain places and defecate in other places if they live outside to mark their territory. They also may prefer to defecate in one litter box and urinate in the other. As long as it's not causing any problems, they're just being cats!

Wild cats also pee and poo in different places. Urine is usually used to mark out territory, so that other animals know they live there and there'll be a fight if they stick around. Feces are usually buried so that other animals don't have a scent trail to where the cat eats or sleeps. It's a safety/dominance thing. And the person who relied and said you need another litterbox was correct.

Cats are very clean and smart, so they know not to mix the poop with the pee. Besides they know what is in each box so they can brace themselves before stepping in. No surprises! lol

Really - this is normal? I think your cats have OCD.... Or maybe my cats are weird... I also have 2 litter boxes and they do both in both.

For some peculiar reason some cats develop this propensity after the kitten stage. It is perfectly normal as I am sure you will learn from the posters here.

I think that cats in the wild probably do their different business in different place so as not to concentrate their odors in only one place to alert their predators to their presence.

That is soooo cool! I wish my kitty could differentiate btwn 2 litter boxes! Then I could scoop one and dump the other! Less pee smell!
