He is a weimaraner who is about 10 years old. He takes several pills a day in "Pill Pockets". He eats vegetables and other foods as snacks/treats. He just won't/can't eat his dog food anymore. He just keeps licking it. He is not acting any different since we found out, about 6 months ago. But, I wanted a meal with nutrients, not too much sodium, but enough protein to satisfy him. He is NOT starving. He is slighlty overweight and still eats, just not his regular dog food. He has a bump in the bottom right side of his mouth which makes it difficult to eat, which is why he licks. He sees the vet regularly.

Chetco's right. Take a canned diet (canidae is one of the best out there. try their platinum formula for your 'senior' dog) and blend it with broth (vegetable stock works best. lower sodium than beef or chicken). the mush will be the perfect consistency for your dog.

Another good idea would be a freeze-dried diet. It's basically a raw meat nugget with all the moisture sucked out of it. A good one is Nature's Variety. It's 95% meat, and 5% fruits and vegetables. 2-3 of these treats a day, coupled with the Canidae mush will ensure your dog is getting all the nutrition it needs. The freeze-dried treat practically dissolves in your dog's mouth, so no chewing necessary.

Plus, by feeding it the Canidae with the Freeze-Dried, your dog will be getting a TON of omega fatty acids, which is very good for your dog.

Lastly, there is an ingredient you can mix in with the mush, that is also in the freeze-dried. It's called MONTMORILLONITE clay. It can be bought at most health stores, or at any place that sells koi supplies. Mix in a small amount (a pinch, at most) with the mush. Montmorillonite is a detoxifying clay with a huge amount of trace minerals inside. It has shown in some cases to help slow the spread of cancer, sometimes even stop it.

Hope this helps. Best of luck!

You can grind the dry food in a food processor and mix it with canned food or any people food he likes and that way you know he will be getting enough nutrition.
I had a doberman that had cancer in his mouth we had him put to sleep as few months ago and I feed him what ever he would eat but also gave him ground dry food when it became hard for him to eat.
It worked pretty well and I knew he was getting enough protein and stuff to keep him going. He did not loose any weight and was active up until we let him go.
I am sorry for what you are going through it is vary hard.

Has your vet suggested Hills Prescription A/D? It may or may not be appropriate since he's still eating other things. It contains a lot of nutrients for both dogs and cats. Unfortunately, I don't know how much sodium it has in it. You might also check to see if there are any veterinary oncologists in your area. They may have some suggestions on what has worked well for their patients with this problem.

Good luck!

I am sorry to hear your dog is ill.
I had an Old English Sheep Dog with bone cancer. She had it in her leg. She was about the same age as your dog. Like you I let her alone as long as she didn't show any signs of being in pain.
She let me know when it was time to say good bye. I knew she would. We had her put down last March.
I would feed him whatever your vet suggests.

Give him graviola and coral calcium with his soft food. Switch to distilled water and check his Ph weekly. Give him foods that will lower his Ph to basic zone. Green tea in his water from time to time.
