There are 2 answers to this question. There is a utensil called a Dutch Oven, made of cast iron, and designed to be used with an open fire. You burn the fire doen to a good bed of coals, and put the dutch oven on them. You put your food insid, and put the lid on, then pile burning coals on the lid, which has a ridge to hold them. You can use it to make stews, or even to bake.

My Lodge 12qt dutch oven cost $50 dollars and will last for generations. I use it all the time.
On a lot of cooking shows you see the dreaded red dutch oven used in product placement. Keep an eye out for them they're everywhere. Payola more than likely. They run $250. I could've bought five for that amount of money. Go Lodge!

A Dutch oven is a big pot used to make pot roasts, chicken or anything that needs to be seared or braised. You can also sear meats in it on all the sides and pop it in the oven to cook the rest of the way. It's a great thing to have in the kitchen.

It is a cast iron bowl or pot that is usually used with an open fire, you put coals on the lid and under it to cook. I line mine with tinfoil because it is SO much easier to clean when camping. They have to be "broken in" by getting them really hot with just a little cooking oil in them and spreading the oil everywhere inside. You are never supposed to wash them with soap and water or you have to do the oil thing again.
I LOVE cooking with them and meals seem to be better cooked in them. I have lots of good recipes if needed...
