Horizontal is generally a level plane going from left to right, or right to left which ever takes your fancy. General and typical examples of horizontal planes would be a floor, table top and ceilings.

horizontal is left to right, like the horizon
vertical is up and down.

The same as the horizon, flat. Vertical would be like standing up, or up and down.

Assuming that you are standing up. Look straight ahead, turn your head to left, and then turn your head to the right..............That's horizontal !!
