Why can't we just accept that we can't convert each other by insults? Why don't we just accept the fact that we all believe different things and leave it at that? Please, I don't mean to offend anyone. Serious answers please.

Because some people feel they are right, and everyone else is stupid for not believing what they do. I agree, it's sad. It doesn't make either belief very attractive hurling insults at each other. I know if I came on this site for the first time, knew nothing of any religion or belief, I would not want to be Christian, atheist, Muslim, anything really. It should be lead by example, but the examples on here are not nice at all.

Well, I can get along with all sorts, but I'll still answer as best I can.

The problem is actually contained in the second question. The first is largely irrelevant - people are not trying to convert each other with insults really. They are trying to mock others' beleifs (or lack thereof) and thereby build up their own.

The problem is that it is hard to hear that your own beleifs are not universally accepted. You'd think rationality would let people happily go their separate ways, but to a lot of people, having others that think differently is somehow a threat to their own beleifs.

Look at it this way: if I 'know' that there is one true God and the tenets of my own faith are the true Chosen Path - how can I reconcile that others do not follow it? That they say that theirs is the true path? We can look at a conflict from outside and say, "Just shrug it off." But it isn't that easy. When one bases their entire life, their entire philosophy (and often a large portion of their bank account) on a beleif system, hearing that it might not be 100% on the spot is similar to calling the person a complete fool and idiot.

For some reason, most folks don't like that.

After all, even if one means it as simply stating one's point of view, not trying to convert anyone, not trying to argue - the fact that one can say it at all means that someone, somehow, has different beleifs that someone else. That makes that someone else angry - to hear that their way, their life, might not be true, might not be right.

We have our ways. Who are YOU to say that yours might be better?

I don't personally care, I'm secure enough in my beleifs that I can easily listen to any challenge without becoming angry. But I'm not saying it was easy to grow to be like that.

I get along with a lot of Christians. My entire family is Catholic, my "second" family is Christian, several of my friends are Christian or otherwise spiritual in some way. We all get along swimmingly, and that's because we understand that everyone has their own mind and perceptions and preferences and beliefs... and that's OK. We're all individuals and it's not hard for us to understand that individuals won't always "join the group" or "go with the flow" or "jump on the bandwagon".

People can't accept the differences in others because they lack this understanding. They are so convinced that their way is the ONLY way that they feel obligated to show others the "true" path. Some people aren't content with allowing everyone to follow their OWN path regardless of whether that path might be "right" or "wrong".

Oh, and fireball: this isn't a "members only club" for the religiously inclined. This is a section to ask about religion and spirituality in general. Don't assume only the religious and spiritual "deserve" to be here... that's not how it works. ANYONE who has an inquiry that pertains IN ANY WAY to religion and spirituality is permitted and encouraged to ask it in the proper section of the site... THIS SECTION.

I thought everyone got along swimmingly today. Everyone was participating in Talk like a Pirate day, and all was ok.

The Muslims were getting bashed this morning though..

Pudding came along and targeted Jim Darwin.

I'm sure there was some bad stuff I missed because I was too focused on Pirate questions.

i get along with alot of atheist and i havent came across any atheist yet that hasn't got along with me, I am not saying that we agree with what eachother believes but we dont insult eachother, sometimes there are fun little debates that happen but never anything that gets out of control, i am not saying that i have not came across an atheist who has not started to bash me, but i don't respond back to them, I think that atheist should be christians but i am not going to try to force anybody to do anything, I just let people know what my views are and many people do the same, but you will never see me call anyone a name or whatever just for not believing the same, i have many atheist friends here at the college i go to and we get along, anyway peace.

Because there are quite a few nutty Christians out there who go around spoiling everything for everyone. Moderate Christians give these peoples beliefs support.

I usually do, once I get past the icredulous/pitying looks. The trouble starts when Chrstians start showering me with flyers, preaching, or trying to get me fired. Or trying to inject religious dogma into science. That really steams me. Beyond that, I keep to myself and live and let live.

fireball, ouleslev and blizgamer..... just look at those reactions and wonder why we can't get along... I haven't seen one atheist saying we can't or shouldn't get along yet, here we have 3 christians doing the same... makes you wonder who is really causing the issue.

It's difficult to "get along" with someone when there is no common ground upon which to build. And neither seems willing to ignore the other.

Because xians can't just let things be. They call us satanists, demons and all kinds of other names. They feel they must evangelize at every opportunity. Atheists just let people be who they are.
