The U.S. team seems pretty strong to me. Why does the team keep insisting that they're underdogs? Is this to make the Europeans overconfident? To lower the expectations of U.S. fans? I think the U.S. should respect the Europeans but why not show more confidence in themselves?

USA is definitely the under dog - The Euros are much better performing as a unit and they have owned us the last couple of Ryder Cups - we need to step up and have our rookies play big

Yep, they're underdogs. Europeans have shown that they play better as a team than the Americans do, and usually the US ends up having to overcome a huge deficit on Sunday.

I think if you take the US
Rookies this year, they do not seem as strong as the EU Rookies. The reason for them saying that they are the underdogs is that this way they can take the pressures of those rookies.

Because the US got slaughtered in 2004, and most of the best American players are not nearly as effective in match play as they are in tournament play (e.g., Tiger, who has a mediocre match play record).
