Certain OEM versions of XP require that your PC is a specific brand (Compaq or Dell for example). Almost all OEM's are fine though on any hardware.
Another problem may be with the product activation. Be prepared for a phone call to Microsoft where you will have to explain the circumstances of your mass hardware changes since your OEM's last activation. You will have to convince them you only have one current installation of XP. Have your original CD and CD key to hand when you phone them.

I'm using OEM on a self build - its legal and fine! All you do is buy a part from Amazon or Dabs or whaerever and buuy the OEM version along with the part, and its legal. I get all the updates and everything else, no problem. Most computers sold are OEM.
Just don't use a manufacturers disc - of course the Dell disc didn't work! Dell have to register each one they activate.
Make sure you buy your own, its about £60.

OEM will work but you may not be eligible for things like Windows update for security fixes and any future upgrades. I've also wondered how the OEM people get around copy right laws. I'm not totally convinced that this form of software is legal.

OEM will work fine, you'll need to apply some modifications to the registry if you plan on using Windows update - (not necessary as you can DL the updates via other means)

I tried this with a dell oem disc that a customer left in our shop and it didn't work...seems it's knows it's not a dell computer by looking at the bios. BTW why not try windows 2000, ask your friends if you can borrow theirs and install it on your machine.

yes this will work ok,but dont go and format the hard drive, let windows xp do it for you, install xp by re-starting and "pressing any key to boot from cd",this will mean you have to go into bios and make your cd/dvd-rom the 1st boot device and save and exit
part way through instalation you will be able to partition and format the drive and then install xp,saving you time
although xp can run with 256mb ram ,it should run best with 512mb ram so try and upgrade this, you will notice the difference
good luck

That's the way, uh huh. Put the disk in and turn it on. As for support, which one guy said you might not get, I say hogwash. 90% of Windows OS sold is "OEM" (Original Equipment Manufacturer.)
