I've had a newfie and they are undoubtedly the best dog you could have with very young children, including toddlers. They have infinite patience, can become quite protective of "their" kids. Mine had a harness and was trained to pull - he loved nothing better in the winter than pulling kids on their sleds. He was also a dog you could have around toddlers learning to walk because you never had to worry about what the dog would do if the toddler fell on him or pulled his hair.
The one and only reservation would be a newfie puppy - because a newfie puppy is still a puppy and they can be just as rambunctious as any other dog when they're very young so a very young child could get knocked over. But if you were to get a puppy now who would be an adult by the time you have kids, you'd be fine.

Peter pan a landseer is Nanny. Awesome with children. Known as the babysitter. Be careful there are a lot of breeders that popped up when the one won the Westminster. Happens every year. They breed cr*p. There are Newf rescues. Big dog rescue is great and I believe they are national. I know I get help from them all the time for my big dogs. My dogs walk with the local newf rescue in parades. The girl here has newfs and corgi's what a combo in that house. The corgis walk to and pull little carts. Newf can sometimes be aloof but always right under foot. Love mine to death but she is gonna be the death of me.

I dont have one but I have worked at 2 boarding kennels and seen alot of them. They are GREAT family dogs, pretty laid back. however, they SHED AND DROOL!!! be prepared!! If you are a neat freak, then this IS NOT the breed for you. Also, be prepared to spend alot of time grooming, as they have such long, thick, double coats. If you live in a hot climate you might consider getting them shaved in the summer. However they are VERY SWEET DOGS!!! I would visit a breeder in your area and see how well you like some of their breeding stock

"Does anyone have a Newfoundland? "
Use to, there are reasons why Newfies are called "Gentle Giants". You will be hard pressed to find a more gentle dog.
However everything in life comes at a cost.
Watch for health clearences when looking for one.
They are short lived compaired with a lot of breeds as are most giant breeds.
And there really are not many around, so they can be expencive.

To be honest, I have never had one. However: My sister did for many years. The man who owns a small business, at which I do business frequently, has a Newfie he takes to his place of business. These are wonderful dogs. I have never seen any gentler, friendlier dogs than these. Wonderful with children, elderly people, other dogs.

From what I understand they're great with kids. I love them as well, but I'm thinking they drool all over. Might want to check on that before you babies are slimed half to death.
