A scientific name for elevated white blood count is leukocytosis. Different diseases can cause an elevated white blood cell count including infection. A very very high white blood cell count is most often caused by leukemia or lymphoma, though I have also seen extremely elevated white blood cell counts as a result of severe infection and also mono.
