You can do that to slow the fast ripening process that happens at room temperature. Best to use bananas when they have achieved their highest natural sugar content. This is evident when they have developed a lot a brown speckling on the skin. After that that they will deteriorate quite rapidly and then should be used as soon as possible.

I've often wondered where fruit flies come from. There aren't any until you have a piece of over-ripe fruit and then there are gazillions of them! Do they come with the fruit, or what?
As to your question -- yes, you can put bananas in the refrigerator, but don't leave them there too long or they will turn black. The secret seems to be buying only a couple of bananas at a time so they don't get overripe while they're sitting on the counter. Or you can get a 'fruit safe' - they use these in the tropics. It's a fine mesh dome that fits over the top of a plate. It keeps flies, wasps and all sorts of other critters out too. But I prefer to eat the fruit fresh, or stash it in the frig for a day.

Bananas will turn black in the refrigerator pretty quickly. But if it will help you get rid of the fruit flies than I say why not try it because bananas are what, $0.49 a lb? So throw them out if they get too black.

Banana is not to be kept in refrigerator as it will turn black. You may keep them outside, covered in flyproof net. Alternately eat and finish all bananas as early as possible!!( If you can!)

you can put bananas in the frig but they will get darker quicker, and they get too cold, I like my bananas at room temperture, they taste better. but to get rid of the fruit flies, pour a cup or wine, any brand, and leave it close to your bananas, fruit flies loves wine, the wind draws them to it, they sips the wine and dies. good luck!

Throw your bananas out, and any other fruit you have laying around. Thoroughly clean your kitchen. Leave NO food out for a month. They should go away.
