So apparently today is "talk like a pirate day." Many "pastafarians," as they call themselves, are considering this a holy day, while Yahoo! and other sources claim that it was started by two guys just trying to see how far it would spread, and to dis his ex wife. So how is it a holy day when it's basically just made up? Does that say that the religion is made up too? Opinions?

Let's not get into the "Is religion fake?" debate.

For whatever reason, holidays (or Holy Days) are usually specific to a particular faith or belief. It normally does not translate out to a wider belief or celebration.

Marti Gras has its basis in the Lenten Season, but it has turned into an excuse for a good party, so whereas Ash Wednesday is a day for Catholics as a Holy Day of Obligation, not too many places recognize it as such.

Many paganistic beliefs revolve around the equinoxes and solstices, important to them, not as much to other faiths

Hello. OK it's to piss off the Christians b/c they always make a big deal about X-mas and stuff...it's like how they tried to institue the Pastafarian religion in schools like the creationists were doing with the bible....it's still going it's like a continual joke among them about the Christians....lol I participate because it's absolutly hilarious and I couldn'y agree more.

Here's a news flash for you, sweetie: ALL religions are "made up" -- that's the entire point that the Pastafarians are trying to make! At least they have fun with it, dressing up like pirates for religious services and whatnot...

Substitute any religion and any holiday for "Pastafarianism" and "Talk Like a Pirate Day" and you have the exact same question.
