It is difficult to negotiate a fair price for a piece of art. The finished piece is worth more than the sum of the labor and materials.
Perhaps the best way to start would be to ask the person who has commissioned you this question: "What have you budgeted for these paintings?" When you have the answer to that, you can set a price that is in their range and compensates you appropriately.
Needless to say, this discussion should have taken place at the time the commission was offered and accepted. I hope they agree to pay you what the paintings are worth. If not, consider this a learning process. Next time, you will know to negotiate first.
In any case, if the paintings are displayed, they may promote interest in your work and be the source of new commissions.

The way I do is this: I charge what I feel my time is worth. $30.00 an hour x how many hours it will take me to complete the project plus the cost of materials. After all if I could be making more doing something else why would I do it? This is a reasonable rate for the area that I live in.

If this is your first commission, the best philosophy is to price this one low enough to impress and then count on word of mouth for more inquiries. Then you can charge whatever the market will bear. My personal take on this job would be to charge a fixed price for the set - $900

The rate in our area for unknown artist are about as follows;
60x45--$500.00
30x30 - $300-$350.00 a piece
24x24---$250.00-$350.00
It all depends on the quality and what the painting consists of (how much time and effort is going into each painting,the detail....)
