This question gets asked about every two weeks.
There is no "backwards" on a flag. The flag has two sides.
The uniform patches are always placed so that the blue field is to the front of the person, as if the flag were on a pole and billowing behind as they walked.

The same reason the flag appears "backwards" when displayed on the right side of Air Force One, and the Space Shuttle. The union always faces forward.

It is shown that way so that it looks like the flag is blowing as a solider moves forward. Imagine if he or her were holding a flag pole while charging forward.

It's what the flag looks like if you're holding it and moving forward.

It's called the running colors. (As if the soldier, sailor, etc were running with the flag, that is how it would appear from that side)
