Why should India be secular when we have witnessed the innate secularism of hinduism being misused by muslims and christians alike?

Because being secular is the very essence of being Indian. Hinduism does not teach us to be intolerant of other religions and forcibly convert others to hinduism. It teaches us to be tolerant and respect all religions. If we declare ourselfs "Hindu republic of India" as is the case with Islamic countries there would be no difference left between the two. We too would become intolerant, violent and take to the streets for every small little thing. But that is not the message of Hinduism.

Secular means without religion.

Christinas and muslims actually USE religion to justify their ways. So, thats not misusing secularism.......
India should just get away from the caste system.....not a very nice way to live - having no chance to better yourself, simply based upon what family you are born into. If western society acted in this fashion, Lincoln would never have been President, and Einstein wouldnt have become who he was either....

Hinduism is secular in itself. There is no grander philosophy. Where else would you find so many practising religions coexisting?
As a secular nation, India should be proud to be an example.

I won't answer this question only because I do not know enough about this topic to make an educated answer. I would guess that most people are probably in the same position as me and that is why they can't answer it.

Sorry :(

Dear suresh 1,

Probably because most people do not understand what you are speaking about including me. Perhaps you should rephrase your question. "For many are called, but few are chosen."
