when i went to go pick up my kid (6), his teaher was outside and had briefly remarked about how my son had a lilttle sharing problem in school that day. so when we got home, i asked him if he in fact had a sharing problem in school today and he said "yes, mommy, none of the kids wanted to give me their stuff!" i've tried to explain sharing and tried teaching him when he is around hi younger cousins but he just doesn't get it. i mean, its not that hard, is my kid so hard headed to understand or is he just mean?

it's not that your child is hard headed, it's because he is 6. Sharing is hard for a child to learn...especially in a day care / school setting. All the other children bring in things that are theirs or play with something first...it is hard for a child to comprehend that. Keep consistency up with him and maybe do some sharing games at home with him.

does the child have any possessions of his own?

I heard the new thing in schools today is that whatever new things (or things in general) that parents send to school with their kids, the stuff is put into one big box and becomes community property anyway. Perhaps there is something strange going on in your schools there, maybe another class or another kid he's heard it from that makes it ok not to share, or suggests that everything is community property. (seems that no possessions thing is the communist way of thinking).

We have playgroups and everyone brings a toy to share. It's difficult, but I think it helps the kids see they can have fun playing with other's toys and others can have fun playing with theirs. They also can play with them together (ie they share crayons or a tea set). It works well.

Take everything he owns give it all to his cousins. Make sure he sees you do this and tell him he does not get it back until he learns how to share.

Just tell him that those kids wouldn't share with him because he wouldn't share with him. Eventually it'll hit him that you have to share to be shared with.

Tell him that if someone else is using something he can ask nicely that when they are done with it if he can use it.
