Can you put shredded paper in your green compost recycle bin?
I always think of Danny DeVito as the Penguin in Batman Returns taping together the shredded documents when I leave it out in a bag with the paper collection box.

Hey Dodgey Jon, have you ever tried phoning the council?

Yes I think they accept paper for compostable waste. Our council does anyway. They even accept cardboard if you cut it up, but only 25% of the bin volume. Paper is best torn up to aid decomposition

Actually, most of the time I tear up any paper for recycling or compost waste. I do have a shredder but I can never be bothered to get it out and plug it in.

I tear a whole batch of stuff every week to about the size of a large postage stamp; I fold each thing in half and then tear it in half at least four times. If you tear a pile of documents like that, break up the wads of pieces and mix them by stirring them together in the bin with your hand for 5 seconds, then cover them with stinky used cat litter for the compost bin, not even the Penguin has a snowball's chance in hell of piecing that lot together !

It's ecologically sound, good compost, great fun, and identity theft proof :)

If you mean the compost bin you keep in your garden yourself to put in veg peelings, grass cuttings etc - Yes.
But I think you probably mean a bin that the council empties once a fortnight or once a week. (Some councils have a recycling bin for clean recyclables and also one for green waste like hedge clippings). In which case, probably No. Most councils say No to shredded paper, because the bits are too small for the machinery to work with. But an accurate and definite answer depends on what your own council's rules are and you can find this out from a website www.direct.gov.uk. From the home page, click on 'Connect to your council'.

Actually, quite often shredded paper can not be recycled from the kerbside, as it is too finely shredded and light to be involved in the MRF (materials recovery facility) process and are not able to be turned into mesh and so are not accepted by the mills.

However, it can be recyled in cardboard banks and is also good for compositing.

Ironically, it is more efficient to supply incinerators with paper to aid burn the other materials held in them, than to put them into recylcing.

Recycling pays for itself, the earnings created from recyling waste is sufficient to pay for sequence and the recycling technique. My different positioned up pertains to this, i herd on radio 4 of a ecu united states of america recycling and utilising the recycling income to pay for the entire technique. the united kingdom is between the worst in europe for recycling as replaced into reported on the information this weekend, even with the actuality we are between the wealthiest countries. If our surroundings isn't an significant ingredient in figuring out who you vote for, the politicans and government wont do everywhere close to adequate, rather focused on what you will vote them in for. Like greater very own wealth.

Yes as long as its not the shiney paper which has lots of salts and chemicals on it.
Chuncky cardboard is good for rotting vegetation down, more cardbaord and paper than vegetation is the rule i thinks *:)
Wee in it that will help as well.
It is bad to give it over to recycling if you can recycle it your self, think of all the fuel used to get your recyclabe goods to the recycling depot, you shout compost stuff your self, will give you some good healthy dirt for your garden.
Put a jumper on in the winter as well, use less central heating, drive slower putt less fumes in the air.
Lets ban 4x4's they are chocking us out of home and land.

PS: THE ISLE OF WIGHT COUNCIL IS AWFULL FOR RECYCLING! WRITE A LETTER TO THEM EXPLAINING THE SIMPLE GUIDE TO RECYLCLING AND TELL THEM TO SORT IT OUT. PLASTICS AS WELL.

I put shredded paper in mine - i was advised to do so (using the layering system). It's VERY good at keeping the number of flies to a minimum.
