Curious as to which Military (Nationality and Branch) you seek to join...

I did 15 yrs in the US Navy as an AW-H (Aviation Warfare Systems Operator - Helicopter). Primary Duty/Mission was ASW (Anti Submarine Warfare) and ASuW (Anti-Surface Warfare). Our secondary Mission was SAR/CSAR (Search and Rescue/ Combat Search and Rescue).

Training: Boot-camp (2 months), Naval Air Crewman School (2 months), Rescue Swimmer School (2 months), AW A-School (3 months), SERE School (2 weeks), Basic Acoustics (2 months), and finally SH-60B crewman training (4 months).

So that was about a year and a half (including travel & waiting) from joining until I was qualified to fly in back.

After about two years, as a result of Operation Praying Mantis, we were given the mission of CSAR and trained with the M-60 as a door-gun.

Oh SURE... a cute lil M-60 against a ground-mounted M-2 .50 cal (or WORSE) !!

Since I left, they upgraded the door-guns to .50 cal, or smaller GAU...

I only flew two missions where we were shot at & shot back... unnerving being in a light aluminum skinned aircraft having tracers coming toward you. Scream at the bad-guy, aim and fire, and pray the pilot is moving your collective butts out of the area ASAP.
