The best dog in the entire world is the lab. I grew up with one and it was the best dog I have every had. The are very smart and the most loving and forgiving dog. Any book you read will tell you that labs are amazing with children and a they are a wonderful family dog. My mom has one lab my sister has two. Not to mention she is pregnant and feels 100% safe knowing that the dogs would never hurt her new born baby. If you want a dog that would be great with the kids, fun to take on trips, and really, a new member of the family consider a lab.

Also you can usually find them in any sundays paper for a decent price.

My vote is for a Pug. They are small but not too small. They generally LOVE kids and enjoy a good romp or to simply sleep next to you while your watching t.v.

They are the largest of the AKC Toy breeds, running usually between 16 to 20 pounds. They have short hair but they do shed. They generally come in two colors: Fawn and Black, however there are other colors such as Brindle, Apricot, etc.

I have no idea what breeders in your area are asking for Pugs, but here where I am, which is in the Great Plains states, they go for between $450 and $550, except in the Metro areas like Denver where they are more.

Good luck and Goddess Bless!

Golden retriever. extremely gentle and sturdy. Completely useless for home defense...well completely useless anything but fetch and "pet me". They're great in the city and don't need as much excercise as most big dogs. I have a toy poodle and they're good with kids, but way to fragile. get a puppy though, not a rescue dog. because your kids are so young, you really need to train it to be gentle, and having a rescue dog with issues can be harmful to your kids. Just make sure to get it into obedience class as soon as it's old enough, because the last thing you want is a dog that won't obey you around your kids. best to do it when big dogs are puppies. Goldens are also very intellgent.

Some breeds are better than others with children. I have heard many times that bulldogs, despite their aggressive appearance, are really gentle.

Ask your vet or pediatrician.

While there are many great reasons to adopt from a shelter, in my experience shelters are full of pit bulls, dobermans, German shepherds and the like. I think these breeds have gotten a bad rap but I would not take a chance when it comes to my children.

My 3 children are between 3 and 6 and we have had several dogs. Most of them weren't too great with the kids and jumped a lot. Then, someone dumped a full blood black and white cocker spaniel at my house and we decided to keep him b/c he was just so great with the kids! They love him and he doesn't jump on them at all. He's the best dog I've had for my children!

A great idea is to adopt a greyhound. They go through foster homes to check their temperament and the adoption agency can find the exact dog to match your family. Greyhounds are extremely laid back. My sister adopted one, she has a 4 year old and a 9 month old, and he is the greatest dog. I don't know about your kids, but my sisters 4 year old always tried to pick up and carry any puppies or small dogs, and the dogs didn't like it. Needless to say, she isn't going to be picking up the greyhound. To find a greyhound adoption agency, just do an Internet search for greyhound adoption agencies in Illinois.

Puppies are a lot of work. I have trained many dogs and do not find that it is easy to get a puppy's attention when children are around. Your children are too young to be able to teach them what to not say to a puppy. The fastest way to ruin a puppy's training is many people telling it what to do in different ways. If your children hear you say NO to the puppy, they may start yelling NO and the puppy will never know what it did wrong.

go to the shelter, they will let you know what animals are great with kids also those dogs are generally house trained already, they have their shots and are fixed. you get them for an adoption cost and they will be getting a much needed home, the people are the shelter are not going to set you up with a dog they done genuinely think will work with your family because they want to find good homes for these dogs.

Unless you can watch your children constantly i would advice against gettign a dog just yet... small children often do no know thier own strength.. and in their quest to administer their love they can injure a dog.. the dog will react naturally and they could be a problem... hold off a few more years...by then your children will be more aware of themselves.. and it woulsd be a good time in introdcue the added responsibilities of taking care of a pet..

STANDARD POODLE. I got one because they are so gentle with kids, have little dog 'smell', don't shed, which is great because with kids you already have so much to clean up. If you want a purebred dog for a cheaper price, go to a rescue in your area, which will be easy to find through petfinder or the akc rescue website. Standards are hard to find, but be patient because they are so worth it!
