All saints day or Hallows day was a catholic celabration of all the saints. Superstition that was rampant in the church and culture of the day created AllHallowsEve (Halloween) the day before when they believed demons and evil spirits would be more active because of the upcoming Holy celebration. They created such customs as putting jack-o-lanterns in their windows to scare off these evil spirits. Halloween just kind of evolved from that.

Catholic High Holy Day, celebrated November 1st, honors all the Saints and good souls who have died. The day before All Saints Day is "Holy Eve, " now translated to Halloween. Hallow = holy, een = eve. That is why I think it is so strange that fundamentalists are trying to make this a day of Satan, which is preposterous, but "preposterous" is the norm for that group.
