It is totally crowded around that time of year. I think that Benihana is a fun place to eat with the family, they cook the food in front of you, but make sure you have a reservation. Shopping anywhere is going to be completely crowded. If you have tons of money and don't mind spending it on designer clothing, go to 5th avenue or Soho to shop. Otherwise, shop along 34th street on Broadway from 8th street on down.
I'd say you have to see Rockefeller Center with the big tree all lit up if you're coming around then. I'd also recommend just walking down 5th avenue to see all of the store windows lit up and decorated, and you can stop in the St. Patrick's Cathedral to warm up, and in Trump Tower which is always decorated, and then finally at Rockefeller Center.

Midtown is a must!
Rockefeller Center (49th Street) - for the Christmas tree and ice skating...
which is located down the block from
Radio City Music Hall (49th & 6th - Avenue of the Americas) - which has the annual Christmas Spectacular - great for all ages.
5th Avenue from 57th down has a lot of stores with lovely decorated Christmas windows.
Macy's on 34th & 6th (Avenue of the Americas) has Santa...
To Eat:
Serendipity's - 61st off 3rd Avenue - is a bit out of the way from all the decorations, - but is close to Bloomingdale's - boasts wonderful hot chocolate and ice cream.
For midtown dining - its quite costly - but all your major theme restaurants are located in Times Square (42nd & 7th Avenue) --
There are not to many "affordable" restaurants around Rock Center you may have to travel downtown for that!
Best of luck & bring your camera!!!

Well, if its before xmas you got to do the xams thing, the tree and Rockerfeller Plaza, the store windows on Fifth Avenue.
The cool places to shop, it depends on what you are looking for; anywhere from soho, thru the villige to midtown. Be ready to walk a lot. The traffic is rediculous that time of year.
Maybe you want to check out placed like the Hark Rock or Motown Cafees.

Try Union Square. During this time of year, small kiosks selling Christmas items are setup in Union Square park. This is centrally located and is located in a bustling neighborhood dominated by students. There is also a Barnes and Noble, and assorted shopping and food in this area, including a multiplex.

December in new york is like winter paradise,if it snows. if not the streets are so beautifully decorated that you will feel the Christmas spirit like never before, that's the best place to spend a few days in December. places to go -all over the city you will find places to go ,places to eat, people to see .you never know who you will see on the streets of new york. enjoy the visit,I miss new york in the winter, not living there in the winter, but the look and feel of winter in central park, just feels right.

Rockefeller Center is a MUST. If you can get tickets to the Christmas Spectacular at Radio City, it's worth it too.

Mike,
For you and wife, Macys at 34th St. and X'mas tree at 30 Rock. For your teens, FAQ Schwarz toy store -- 58th St. on 5th Ave. If the boys are older and like tech. toys and sports, the Apple Store and sport shops like PUMA in SoHo.
