My six year old and I will be taking a flight in a few weeks. She has been on a plane once before, when she was one, and has no recollection of it. I am worried that she will freak out when it is time to get on the plane. What are some ways to prepare her for the flight, and make her at ease about flying.

Tell her positive things about flying. Tell'er you're a little nervous too, so at least she knows that she's not alone in feeling the way she does. Also, tell her that you're excited to be flying again because it's been a long time since you both rode on an airplane and you've forgotten how fun it was to see the sky and clouds up close.

If she hasn't been on one before, take her for a bus ride. Tell her that the plane will be like the bus, only bigger and nicer. Emphasize the positive points of the flight, like that people will bring her a snack and something to drink, or grandma will be waiting for us at the other end. Tell her that she'll get to go way up in the air in the clouds, too. Pack something to keep her busy, too - a new toy or coloring book would be good. Some favorite snacks will help, too.

Most kids are pretty adaptable to changes. She'll most likely pick up on your behavior and model that. If you're excited and looking forward to the trip, she probably will be, too.

Hello there :)
When I was little I flew back and forth across the atlantic alot, (i still do) to see my family in Scotland, What my mom would do (this works) is have about 6 different little presents for me, like small magnetic puzzells, miniature magnetic board games, colouring books ect, and when we first got on the plane she would give me one, and tell me I could open the others later, it gave me something to look forward to and ocupy me on the long flight, also see if the flight offers gameboys that you can borrow during the journey, that was another favorite, also for the landing and take off, bring a camera and let your child take photos out the window, its fun, and the pictures look very cool :)
Hope this helps!
Good luck

Also when your taking off and landing the pressure change makes your ears pop, so give your child a piece of gum to chew, or something to suck on so that he/she keeps swallowing, the pressure change is not painfull, just feels a little funny the first time!!

Be sure to put a positive spin on it with an enthusiastic tone of voice and excitement about the "fun" of traveling. Get a book from the library to read aloud that has a plane trip in it. They should also have some nonfiction books that show the inside of an airplane so that will be familiar.
