if it starts with EL is masculine.
if starts with LA is femenine.
there are very few exceptions of femenine workds that start with EL, for instance:el agua (femenine), el aguila (femenine).
also a good tip is this one: 80% of the words that end with A are femenine, and the ones that end with O are masculine. (also there are few exceptions: la mano (ends with O and is fem), el mapa (ends with A but is masc.)

We'll make this easy: If it starts with el, it's masculine. If it starts with la, it's feminine.
