I spent 5 week in sydney and I loved it. the people are very nice, its very friendly to america as well. I was surpised at how many american shows and fast food chains are there. The conversion rate is great with american money. The weather was mild when I was there (and since it was their winter i was surpised). Theres also a lot to do there too, tourist, shopping, shows, everything that one would want you can find in sydney. Hope this helps

I'm a Sydney-sider, but love Tassie and Melb.
Sydney is described as the "beautiful" sister between us and Melb, we have the beaches, the house, the bridge and the weather.
Melbourne is slightly more cultural, but not as pretty. Great for shopping! And they have penguins and the Great Ocean Road too.
Tasmania is spectacular. Take a trip around, its only small (3hr drive top to bottom) but the scenery is spectacular. Don't go in winter as its freezing - winds blow straight off the Ar tic! I've been twice and if you love bush walks and so on, you'll love it too!
See you down under soon!

lets get one thing straight,
Tasmania contary to beleive is apart of Australia and is located around 450KM south of Melbourne.
I currently live in Launceston in the central north and its ok but if you really want a great veiw here head towards the northwest coast, past Devonport-where I'm moving hopefully before xmas and head to a place called Table Cape, its around 7KM out of Wynyard and is simply a nice place to sit in peice and quiet, think about things and even propose to your partner......

other than that head to Mt Wellington which is located 14KM from Hobart in the south and gives awesome veiws of Hobart and the surrounding valley's, this is amazing....

If you would like any further information on Tasmania and inparticular the northwest coast feel free to contact me via email.

hope this helps abit.

cheers,
Mitch

The name Australia is derived from the Latin Australis, meaning of the South. Legends of an "unknown land of the south" (terra australis incognita)

Australia, officially the Commonwealth of Australia, is a country in the Southern Hemisphere comprising the world's smallest continent and a number of islands in the Southern, Indian, and Pacific Oceans. Neighbouring countries include Indonesia, East Timor and Papua New Guinea to the north, the Solomon Islands, Vanuatu and the French dependency of New Caledonia to the northeast, and New Zealand to the southeast.

The continent of Australia has been inhabited for more than 42,000 years by Indigenous Australians. After sporadic visits by fishermen from the north and by European explorers and merchants starting in the seventeenth century, the eastern half of the continent was claimed by the British in 1770 and officially settled through penal transportation as the colony of New South Wales on 26 January 1788. As the population grew and new areas were explored, another five largely self-governing Crown Colonies were successively established over the course of the nineteenth century.
On 1 January 1901, the six colonies federated and the Commonwealth of Australia was formed. Since federation, Australia has maintained a stable liberal democratic political system and remains a Commonwealth Realm. The capital city is Canberra, located in the self-governing Australian Capital Territory. The current national population is around 20.6 million people, and is concentrated mainly in the large coastal cities of Sydney, Melbourne, Brisbane, Perth, and Adelaide.

Tasmania
Tasmania lies south of the 40th line of latitude, in the path of the world's cleanest winds. The island is separated from mainland Australia by the 240 kilometre-wide Bass Strait and is Australia's smallest state - about the size of the Republic of Ireland and twice the size of Switzerland. While it may be compact, locals don't like it when anyone leaves it off a map of Australia!
suggested itineraries
Being a compact island, Tasmania's regions clip together in little modules, allowing the visitor to easily plan a holiday based on what to see or what to do. In our Regions section we have suggested things to do in each area and our Attractions area has many special interest areas. As a guide line, allow at least three days for each region you want to explore, remembering that it only takes an hour or two to drive through a region if you just wanted to enjoy, say, Hobart, the Tasman Peninsula and Launceston & Tamar Valley in a week.
getting there
Bass Strait is the sea-road to Tasmania. The route is operated by three superfast ships, Spirit of Tasmania I, II and III. These vessels offer an overnight service in both directions between Melbourne and Devonport seven days a week, year round, with additional services in peak periods; and a service from Sydney to Devonport in both directions twice a week, with additional services in peak periods.
For those traveling by air, Virgin Blue and Jetstar operate frequent services to Tasmania, with direct flights from Sydney, Melbourne and Brisbane to Launceston and Hobart. Regional Express operate services to Burnie and King Island. King Island Airlines and TasAir also operate services to King Island. Island Airlines Tasmania operate services to Flinders Island.

All of the places you have listed are nice - depends on your preference. Sydney is very business, nightclubs etc. Melbourne is eating out, society, museums and Tasmania is laid back - holiday
