My Grandfather is turning 80 and I have been invited to celebrate his birthday with him. I don't know him very well but want to get him something. Any suggestions?

good question!
grandpas are usually pretty cool - and by the time they reach 80 they're set in their ways. good gifts are the ones that remind them of fond memories - things like old music, movies, books and vintage clothing help them remember their youth. If he's 80, he was born before 1920 - which means he was a youngster in the 40-50's - I bet he likes big band music.
But since you may not know him well, a better gift is something that comes from you - from your heart. Introduce him to something that's your favorite. Maybe favorite place to eat, favorite play, favorite entertainment place - museum, opera, park.
Other big hits with grandpas are family photographs - it's their legacy - they're usually proud of that. A framed photo of you at an important milestone in your life is always cool - esp. if grandpa is in it. Handwritten notes or drawings are also something that can't be bought. Especially from grandkids and great-grand kids. If he's from another country - try bringing him food from "the old country." Stores like World Market have all kinds of cookies and sweets from everywhere around the world. Or you might consider a good bottle of wine - or even whiskey (what grandpas don't like whiskey?).
If grandma is alive- ask her. She should know what your grandfather likes.
Usually at 80 - grandpas don't splurge much anymore. Paying for a gourmet meal/dessert, expensive article of clothing (shirt, scarf, hat) or electronics (radio, tv, ect) is usually something they do without.
Things that help pass the time away are appreciated by grandpas.
But I would think nothing would compare to an invitation to spend a day with you and your family to some low-key outing.
hope this helps.

Maybe a gift certificate to a resturant and an invitation for the two of you to share a meal. Get to know him before it is to late. Why do you not know him well?
