I just found my cat in the closet with one little kitten. We also have another cat and it's a female also and she is being very protective of the other cat(mom) and her baby. I don't want to move them out of there, but is it normal to just see 1 baby kitten?

Sometimes, especially if it's the mom's first litter. Keep a good eye on her, especially with the other female cat, because she could try and take the kitten or even harm it.

I have had cat's my whole life and it is unusal to only have 1 kitten in a litter. Most cats, even their 1st litter have 4 or 5 kittens. It can take a few hours before she is done birthing. Keep her where she is and let her wash the kitten.
You might go ahead, once Momma Cat breaks the imbilical cord, dispose of the placentas though, she will try to eat them and more than likely vomit them up later. Saving yourself the mess and her the experience of going through that part.
Also, give her 24 hours or so before you handle the kittens. Momma Cat will love your giving her that time too.
Of course if one acts like it's not breathing, go ahead and gently rub it's belly and VERY gently blow towards it's face.
Other than that, Momma cat and her kittens will be a great experience for the next couple of months.

It takes time to have babies. If she still looks fat she's prbable got more in there. It can take up to 24 hours for her to have all her babies. Don't move her but put a box with clean towels in it for her and if you must move the baby do it with gloves on or use a washcloth/towel to move it into the box. Keep the other cat away this will only upset mother and she may attack. If this is her first litter she maybe inexperienced so keep an eye on her and get a jar of baby food like a meat one if you can to give mother after she is finished having babies she may be weak.

Yes, just leave both of them alone, if possible leave the house completely and let the mama cat do her job. Sometimes it takes all day for a cat to give birth to a whole litter. Again, the best thing you can do is leave them alone until you are sure the mom has completed labor and she has started nursing.

She has just started having them. She could have another one hours from now, or even tomorrow. She can even have one every day! Leave her where she is, she is comfy. She will come out when she wants food.

My cat's first litter was 4 kitties. My friend's cat's first litter was also 4, but it took 3 days for her to have them all. A friend's siamese, her first litter she had 12! Hope you don't have a siamese.

It is very much so a possibility that she only had one kitten. most cats with their first litter will only have one. how ever it also can take up to 12 hours to have all of them i would defiantly feel around the abdomen and if you feel like a hard lump that is more then likely a kitten. and you may want to check with your local vet to just see. good luck and congrats!!!

You should take your cat to the vet to make sure there are no other kittens, live or dead, inside her. Then please spay and neuter the mom and all the babies. There are so many kittens out there dying on the street and in shelters there is no need to add more to the population.

Yes, it is normal but I wouldn't pick the kitten up or move the kittens as mom will neglect the kittens

Maybe there's more kittens on the way, it can take hours to have them all.

I just thought I'd ask though, why isn't the poor cat spayed?
