I am assuming you reinstalled windows. First, as crazy as it sounds, make sure the speakers are plugged in. If that is not the issue find the name of the sound card and make sure you have the drivers installed for it. If you do not, you have it try to find it on the Internet and download it from a site that deals with drivers. Good luck! I found this program just now. Maybe it will be useful to you. P.S. a driver is a program that tells your hardware ( sound card) what to do. It will be very helpful if you list the name of the sound card on here.

"re-install your comp"? Do you mean reload your operating system? You probably just messed up your drivers. Reinstall your original drivers for the soundcard. No, you shouldnt need a new soundcard, unless it has been physically damaged.

If you install XP, chances are that it will find your drivers. See if you can download them from the manufacturer first, or create a backup of your operating system just in case anything goes wrong. Try Start/programs/accessories/system tools/backup on win 2000 and XP. You need to save it to another hard drive or a DVD.
Remember to check the box marked ( SYSTEM STATE ) when you do a backup as it will save your drivers too.

Sounds like you are missing the drivers to the soundcard. Go to your manufacter's website and download the driver pertaining to your model.
Example:
For Creative soundcards go to sblive.com and support.

If you are using XP just reinstall as drivers might be corrupted. Or try going to the Control Panel/Sounds Audio Devices Properties/Audio tab/Volume and uncheck the mute.

if you are using the comps restoration disks you may be able to look in the owners manual (some actually give good inst.) if you are then use the restoration disk for drivers, then when it comes up just click on manual installation, then find your sound card.
