I got into an aarguement with my stepmother today because she said i child will end up with a boiled brain if they have a fever of 105 or higher. i said thats not true. The reason for the arguement is b/c my sister took my neice to the hospital last night and they obviously didnt say anything....is she being rediculous again or is there some truth to it. Any responses are greatly appreciated.

my neice was sent home from school yesterday and sis took her to the emergency room. they did some tests or something and concluded she probably just had a bad virus. Last night it hit 105 and sis took her to ER again, shes been giving her medicine and her fever as of this morning was 99.4, so shes doing better. Thanks for everyones responses, i just had a hard time believing that the brain could boil at 105 degrees. didnt even occur to look up the temp at which water boils. very smart. Thanks everyone! just needed corroboration. And yes...she IS one of those crazy people. (she thinks texas doesnt have tornadoes) HAHAHAHAHA. We live in tx.

O_o okay, your step mom is one of those crazy people. I can barely understand your question but I have read it and came to the conclusion that your sister must be one of those overprotective moms and there is nothing that can be done. You just have to be patient. If your niece has bruising (and I might be wrong so please, don't get mad.) or something, call Children's aid Society. They will place your niece in foster care!

While I didn't totally understand your question I think you are asking about a fever of 105 in a child and that your niece went to the E.R. last night with one. Am I correct?

If I am then this is my response......While it is not unusual for a young child to run a temperature as high as 105, it should always be checked out. Taking your niece to the emergency room was the right thing to do. But as the guardian of two 2 year old grandchildren I can tell you that unless there is a raging infection causing the high fever, they will not keep a child with a fever if it reacts to medication. I am raising a 2 year old granddaughter who was born 10 weeks premature. She has had a lot of medical problems and has run high fevers also. They have always told me to give her Tylenol at 12-4-8 am and pm and give her Motrin at 2-6-10 am and pm. If her fever does not respond to that treatment, then I am to take her in to the E.R.
Having a fever of 105 in a young child will not boil the brain....a fever is the bodies way of fighting of any type of infection.

A fever of 105 in a child will not make her brain boil. Children can have higher temperatures. The pediatrician said that they are generally fighting something and the fever burns it off. While a fever of 105 would merit a call to the doc I would never put a child in ice water. It can do more damage than good. But no, 105 cannot make your brain boil.

If her temp does not come down after 2 TEPID (barely warm) baths and ibuprofen take her back right away. DON"T use icewater. There is really no need for that. It will only hurt her, and possibly lower her natural defense to whatever she's fighting. Just put her in a tepid bath and pour water over her repeatedly. If she's that hot, you will feel the water actually get warmer as it draws off heat. I had a temp of 106 when I was 16 but only for about 3 hours then it broke; I had the flu. 2 tepid baths. It will work. Try it. She'll feel a lot better.

well if an adults temp was that high then there would be critical problems even death but a childs can handle a fever higher than an adult but if they sent you neice home with a temp. of 105 then that is ridiculous and you need to bring her back right away or stick her in a tub of ice water and give her some ibprophrin right away. but it is true for an adult you can also start hallucinating with a temp that high.

Most of the human body is made of water which boils at 212 degrees, not 105.

It will not make the brain boil, however, it's not good for the body temperature to be that high, it is something to be concerned about. It can cause convulsions, etc.
