Where are you located? In the US, most local TV channels now broadcast HD over the air (ABC, NBC, CBS). You can go to http://ww2.titantv.com/?KeohiHDTV and check out the local tv listing for your area - they will mark which programs are in HD format.

You just have to put in your zipcode and it will give you a map with the direction of all stations.
I put up a small antenna, about 19"x22" and get over 90% signal strength and I am 50 miles away from most of the transmitters.
I used this antenna:

There is a smaller or larger version available depending on your needs. I was suprised to recieve over 40 digital stations.
Many of them are foriegn language, or selling stuff 24/7, but all the major networks are there and some of them have extra channels like NBC in our area is 4.1, and 4.2 has 24 hour weather. 5.1 is KTLA and 5.2 is 24 hour videos called The Tube.
I got the Sony HiDef recorder that has a HD tuner is it works great, the picture is great. And no monthly fees. I looked into HD cable, and I would have had to spend $80 a month and only about 8 channels were in HD, maybe they added more in the last year but it wasn't even including the major networks.

ABC, NBC, CBS, Fox, and PBS all offer some HD programming for free over the air waves. TNT, ESPN, ESPN2, The Discovery Channel, HDNet, HBO, Showtime, UHD, HDN, YES (many local sports channels) are among the pay channels being broadcast in HDTV.

Most of the big stations do, but you need a HD antenna to pick them up.
