Depends how old and how ugly they are! If you have to keep the heating system you will have to replace them with newer, not-so-ugly storage heaters as you cannot fit normal heaters to the same wiring and controls, as there will be no thermal storage capacity (bricks) inside.
The best and probably more expensive option is to install a 'wet' central heating system, gas, oil or solid fuel depending on what's available where you live. A lot depends on the type of house construction and how well insulated it is.
Newer storage heaters made by Dimplex and Creda are the nicest, but are still not very pretty, although a lot slimmer than the old ones, less than 6"/150mm deep these days.

Electric storage heaters should be removed and taken to the dump never to show their faces again. They are like blackmailers, do yourself a favour and get proper central heating installed., it will increase the value of your property if you ever intend to sell. It may come as a surprise to you but 2 identical houses in close proximity to each other, the one with storage heaters is cheaper to buy than one with NO heating.
