Generally, the profession commit the crime based on a logical and rational cost-benefit analysis. What are the risks of getting caught, and the fixed costs of the job, versus the possible payoff.

The amateur, on the other hand, often makes impulsive decisions based on emotional thrills, pure greed, and without fully considering the possible risks if things go bad.

Hmm, that's an interesting question....

Professional thieves tend to be aware of the legal courses of the crime, so they are more cautious then amateur thieves.

Amateur thieves tend to steal for several reasons; drug habits, thrill-seeking, or even as a statement for some perceived wrong.

Most professional thieves are creatures of opportunity, not seeking to use violence to secure their plunder.

Amateur thieves tend to act aggressively and use too much force in the commission of their crimes.

Apparently thieves in general tend to have a motivation to steal other people's property in an effort to profit.

Most thieves are creatures of opportunity, stealing what is perceived to not be well-guarded and easy to steal.

Most thieves do not think that what they are doing is wrong, but instead make excuses for their actions, like the person deserved it or they wouldn't miss it.

Both steal.

The difference is the professional thief steals only high value items and is rarely caught.
