Medicare coverage begins, usually, at age 65. You still need what is called a medicare supplement insurance policy. It is important to get this insurance, because the insurance pays the part of APPROVED medicare costs not covered by medicare itself. If you do not have insurance, some medicare providers expect you to pay ALL the charges medicare does not pay. This is double speak, I know. But our experience has been that a plan E, and Medicare pretty much take care of medical expenses that medicare covers any part of. Without supplemental insurance, medicare pays eighty percent of approved expenses. But the kicker is, that providers charge way more than medicare approves. and without insurance some providers expect you to pay the inflated charges that medicare does not approve. My husband had to pay over a thousand dollars each year for his echocardiogram before medicare, and now the same clinic gets about three hundred and fifty from medicare and his supplemental insurance. You see the difference between medicare approved charges and all the charges?

As for your underage spouse, simply keep the current insurance you have together, but just with your spouse insured. Get yourself a medicare supplement. And be sure to look into Part D for prescriptions for yourself.

When your spouse reaches 65, then switch to medicare supplement for your spouse, too.

If you are really shopping around, call the insurance commissioner's office in your state, and ask for the contact information for insurance companies that are licensed to sell medicare supplements in your state. Be sure also to ask for the A M Best ratings for all these insurance companies, and deal only with top rated ones. Insurance companies are rated on how likely they are to have the money on hand to pay masses of medical claims in the event of and epidemics, or natural disasters. Then search the internet for local representatives of the best insurance companies, and call to have an agent come and explain things. Go also the social security office for brochures on all the different kinds of medicare supplements. Be sure you understand what each supplement pays for you and what it does not. Insurance companies charge different rates for the same coverage, and you want the lowest rate, with the best rated company. Local insurance offices are good, but not essential, because you will be dealing by phone mostly anyway.
