Absolutely. My sister-in-law's son did it. When the young man became an adult, he changed his name back to his mother's maiden name. His father had had minimal fatherly involvement in his life and he grew up around his mother's family. He basically identified with that name/family much more so than his father's name.

Yes my uncle had his name changed to his mother's maiden name. He wanted to be an actor and thought that name looked better.

His dad abused him. It was originaly John Jacob Jingle Heimer Scootoli.
He loved his Mom. So he went with Smith.

My husband almost did after a terrible separation between his parents.
He decided to keep what he was given, and that the divorce had nothing to do with him.
But, yes you can do it, theres no problem with that.
