everytime i let her outside she runs like the wind and then i look like a idiot trying to catch her. She is 2 years old and fixed. Is she ever going to just hang around or what? Also, shouldn't she be done chewing my stuff up by now?

For one thing, to understand their nature you need to know that these dogs were bred to kill vermin (badgers, rats, etc. "Dachshund" actually means "badger dog" in German.) so they have a very strong hunting instinct. She may have caught the scent of something. And man...you have no idea how fast a dog with 3" legs can move. Even at full sprint my husband (an athlete) has a time catching ours if they get loose. I would say you definitely need to get training, but it's far better to keep them leashed b/c you never know when some critter will tempt them!

The chewing, well..that is training too. Make sure she has toys & chwing implements of her own & keep her away from your "stuff" like shoes, etc.

Are you crate training? It's really an important tool; ask any trainer or vet.

Dachshunds are active dogs - she will probably still be running fast as lightning for a long time (until she develops back problems, that is). You need to attend a training class to teach her to come when called. Until then, keep her on leash, or at least bring some hot dogs outside with you to lure her to you if you are in a fenced area.

Dogs always have a need to chew. Dogs don't magically know what is appropriate for chewing once they reach a certain age - they must be taught what they can chew on and what they can't. Put your stuff away so that she can't chew it. Use Bitter Apple on the stuff you can't put away. And have plenty of rubber toys and rawhides around the house and praise her when she chews on them.

Hang in there. Dogs are generally still puppies at that age. She will probably start maturing within the next year. Make sure she has lots of chewy toys that are safe for dogs, and gets plenty of exercise. I definitely agree with the poster above. Get her a harness and a leash and take her for walks. You don't want her running out in front of a car or something. Weiner dogs are sweet, wonderful dogs, but generally are not street smart.

Well, do you walk her on a leash? Do you play with her when you take her outside? She could be just playing or it could be an issue with assumed dominance (she thinks she is in control). All dogs will chew at any age. 2 years should be enough for her to know the difference between what she should chew on and not. Target her chewing, use rawhide or another type of 'chewy' item and praise her for chewing the correct thing and scold (don't punish) her for chewing the wrong thing.

You need to teach your dog to "come". A dog should NEVER be allowed outside without a leash unless it is in a fenced in safe area, or completely trained. First of all it is illegal to have your dog outside without a leash. If she runs out into the street and gets hit by a car, it will be your fault, not the driver. If she rusn next door and gets eaten by the neighbors dog, it will be your fault. If she runs into the neighbors kids and hurts them by biting and nipping, it will be your fault. It sounds like you need to go to a training class. Don't let her outside anymore without a leash. Whenever you call her, praise her when she comes and never punish her for not coming when you do catch up to her. STOP chasing her - she will think its a game. IF she gets out walk towards her directly and don't smile. do not run. don't say anything. Eventually she will get tired enough for you to coax her to you, and then, even though you will be mad as heck that she has been running from you, praise her for finally coming. In a training class you will get further instructions, and she will get more practice in coming when called. Also, make sure she has plenty of toys that are chewable - like nylabones and kongs. Spray bitter apple on the things you don't want her to chew. If possible keep things she cannot chew on out of reach so that she won't have the oppurtunity to get into her old ways.

Keep her on lead! I HATE loose dogs! She can get into trouble with another dog (you have NO idea if another dog is friendly) or get hit by a car. I have been teaching training classes for 25 years and my dogs are ALL ONLEAD, why isn't yours? It is the responsible thing to do.

She is a Hound, I would never assume she will just hang around. Some Hounds are naughty their whole lives, she may chew stuff forever.

KEEP HER ONLEAD! Put stuff away and supervise her so she isn't able to chew things up.

You need to go to www.advancesinanimalbehavior.com there's a link for chewing and the running she's burning off energy.... smaller dogs tend to be more energetic than large dogs.

Take her to a trainer if you dont train her to stay at your side and heel and come when called you will be fighting with her for the rest of her life(not fun)
And she prolly thinks that you are playing a game with her so stop it before she makes it the only game you 2 play
~good luck~
