light-headed

I was scared to death the first time I flew. I'm not an extremely religious person, but I prayed more that day than I do in two months time. I almost freaked out right before boarding. Now I cant wait to get down the Jetway.

But once I got on, I loved it. I don't fly a lot, but I love it and think it's VERY safe. I'm very anxious for the first 20 seconds of so, and my eyes never leave the window. It's like I want to make sure we're in the air safely before I look away (as opposed to my first flight, where I had a death grip on the seat in front of me.)

I do take comfort, believe it or not, in the fact that we will be okay if the engines stop turning. The plane has the ability to glide for miles before it has to land. With all the airports around this country, I am happy to know we're never too far from a safe emergency landing.

If you ever feel fear on a plane, just remember that those flying it want to get home as much as you do. They crew is well trained, the plane is well built, and we'll all get there safely.

Quite safe. The safety record of airlines is outstanding; you have a far better chance of being in an accident on the way to the airport than you do on a flight. The safety record for small airplane aviation is not nearly as good, but small planes are much easier to land safely than big ones if a situation arises. I landed on a road once when, due to weather, I ran out of fuel. The damage consisted of a dent in a wing which hit a speed limit sign.

Your chances of being involved in an aircraft accident are about 1 in 11 million. On the other hand, your chances of being killed in an automobile accident are 1 in 5000. Statistically, you are at far greater risk driving to the airport than getting on an airplane. However, the perception is that you have more control over your fate when you are in your car than as a passenger. Experience shows otherwise considering that over 50,000 people are killed on the highways every year

I feel the same way about flying in Jet aircraft as I do about getting on a bus, in my car, on my bicycle. I dont worry. If the airline is reputable and has a good safety and aircraft maintanence record, why worry, an aircraft is like a car, you take care of it and it should keep going all the time. If the airline is not reputable, I dont go near it.

From an aviation point of view, not at all. From a security point of view, I have concerns. One thing I will tell you is if I were ever on a plane that anyone was trying to hijack, they would have a fight on their hands. I am not going down without a fight, without a whimper. Besides for many years I have been able to carry what could be defined as one or more "weapons" on a plane without every getting caught. Perhaps it is my military background and knowledge.

Pretty damn safe. Your chances of dying in a plane crash are a one-year risk of one in 400,000 and one in 5,000 lifetime risk. You're much MUCH more likely to die in a car accident than die in a plane crash.
