A cigarette won't actually ignite gas (well it would be very, very dificult, it's not hot enough and there is no naked flame), a friend of mine does this as a party trick, puts his cigarette out in a cap full of gas/petrol. He hasn't set himself on fire yet. Funny watching peoples reactions.
The lighting of the cigarette is the dangerous part, the naked flame can and will ignite gas fumes. If you light the cigarette a safe distance from the gas station, and extinguish your lighter, you should be pretty safe.
That said, i'll put a disclaimer down here, that i am no expert, and that my answers should not be taken as the truth, if you burn to death, i will accept no responsibility. Gas stations generally prohibit smoking, so don't do it, i'm sure there has been a case somewhere where one has caught fire from a cigarette, like mobile/cell phones, the chances are minute but it's happened once, so not worth the risk.

Because some lit part of the cigarette could hit the gas fumes, catch the car on fire, blow up the car, and possibly blow up the gas station in the process. Also you can kill innocent people in the process, and no one likes that at all, unless you are a crazed psychopath.

It is perfectly safe, Gas is not flammable and cigarettes are not that hot anyway, puff away my friend while filling 'er up.
Sometimes though there can be a freak accident as portrayed in real life movie "zoolander".

its perfectly OK...... the liquid itself would extinguish the cigarette.... (seriously,, you can throw a cigarette in a bucket of gas, and it will just kill the smoke)
but its the fumes you will have to be wary of... they can ignite from a spark or hot ash off yer Marlboro......
as long as there is a good breeze outside, you will just fine.

go ahead and blow your self up if ya want to...smoke at the pump and see if you are lucky enough not to ignite yourself. As for the kids, leave them at home next time, they would probally be safer.

The gas station will only let you smoke if you buy their cigarettes.
Same reason you can't masturbate in an adult store parking lot.

Sure but make sure you test the lighter under the stream of gas first. Just to make sure it's working.
