My dad and I want to be able to buy used cars at auctions and sell them to the public(not on a car lot) we want to just maybe sell a few here and there. What kind of license do we need and how do we go about getting it?

You need a dealer license. Check with your states DMV for the exact requirements in your state.

There will be a state license required as well as registering yourselves as a business. There are usually fees ($500 a year) to have this license and there will be certain requirements that you need to meet ot maintain it. Look at the state government page for your state to find the info. The DMV may have it also...

well, you are going to have a hell of a time getting a dealer's license without a car lot.... but you will also need a wholesaler's license and potentially a sales license.

there is purely one piece of paper which you extremely prefer from him the next day...the call! you're taking that and have the vehicle transferred on your call. that could have all the pertinent records on it..your call, address, purchase value of the vehicle, mileage, and so on. Oh, and confirm to get a receipt too!
