What country? That is a very good question.
Look up wikipedia and you will find that Volvo was founded by employees of SKF ball bearing company. Volvo which stand for "i-roll" in Latin has Swedish origins. Although, in the late 90's Volvo sold their car division to Ford, Volvo still has significant autonomy in design and maintain their commitment to car safety, something the cars were well renowned for.

Having held many Volvo parts in my hand, they always state their country of origin. They are not only manufactured in Sweden but largely in the EU (European Union), United Kingdom, France, Spain, Germany and a dodgy Electronic Throttle Module from Italy, just to name a few. Source of parts are not limited to just the EU but other parts of the world, eg. my OEM Volvo Ipod adapter comes from China. I have also seen the Volvo parts from the USA and Japan.

Most of Volvo's assembly happens in 2 plants in Gothenburg, Sweden (that is Göteborg, Sverige to those of you who speak Swedish). Selected models are also assembled in Belgium, South Africa, Thailand and Malaysia. Volvo's were also once assembled in Canada, Australia and a plant in Netherlands now winding down.

In a nutshell, Volvo is a Swedish company owned mostly by Americans, whose parts and components are sourced mostly in the EU (European Union) and are assembled largely in Sweden but also assembled in other countries.

Volvo car corporation is based in Goteborg Sweden. However they do have assembly plants in other countries such as Belgium. If you go to the Volvo cars USA web site and look under overseas delivery you can read about a program that allows you to take delivery of your new Volvo in Goteborg Sweden directly from the assembly line after a tour of the factory. Not to mention that Volvo pays for your two week stay in Europe and provides temporary license to drive your car while you are there and they ship it back to the US for you.

Sveden, ya.

No, seriously, Volvo is a Swedish company, NOT GERMAN. I bet if you looked at the Volvo website they probably have some sort of historical page that tells you about their history. They made some pretty sweet cars in the 50's and 60's, too.

AB Volvo (or Aktiebolaget Volvo) is a world-leading Swedish manufacturer of commercial vehicles, trucks, buses and construction equipment, drive systems for marine and industrial applications, aerospace components and financial services. The automaker was founded August 10, 1926 in the city of Gothenburg, as a spin-off from roller ball bearing maker SKF (Svenska Kullagerfabriken AB). Volvo Cars, the automobile manufacturer, has been owned by the Ford Motor Company since 1999.

Volvo is Latin for "I roll" or "I turn." The name Volvo was originally registered in May 1911 as a separate company within SKF AB and as a registered trademark with the intention to be used for a special series of ball bearing, but this idea was only used for a short period of time and SKF decided to use "SKF" as the trademark for all its bearing products. The company Volvo AB had no activities until the 10 August 1926 when the SKF Sales Manager Assar Gabrielsson and Engineer Gustav Larson, after one year of preparations involving the production of 10 prototypes, set up the car-manufacturing business Volvo AB within SKF group. Volvo AB was introduced at the Stockholm stock exchange in 1935 and SKF then decided to sell its shares in the company.

The first series produced Volvo automobile, called 'ÖV4' (Öppen vagn (Open wagon)-4 cylinders) left the factory on 14 April 1927. Just 996 cars were produced between 1927-1929. 'ÖV4' was replaced by model PV651 in April 1929. Volvo's first success in the automobile production came with the PV444 that was introduced in september 1944.

The Volvo Group today has more than 81,000 employees, with manufacturing in 25 countries and sales in more than 185 markets. The group provides complete solutions for financing and service. The Volvo Group's net sales 2004 amounted to €22 billion. Renault owns 20% of the Volvo Group.
