The ear pain is caused by rapid changes in air pressure as the plane's altitude changes. This affects the middle ear causing pain.
Try chewing gum, yawning, or swallowing. If babies are traveling take a pacifier or bottle for them.
Another thing is if you still have earaches long after the flight see you doctor as you could have an ear infection that was aggravated by the flight. Good luck!

Chew gum the whole trip before,during, take off,and during landing.

Chewing, swallowing with your mouth open, and if you get the ache on descent, hold your nose, close your eyes and blow.
