I was just starting to get into exercising regularly when I broke my foot two weeks ago. I'd rather not go for 6 weeks without exercising, and I'm wondering if anyone has suggestions about aerobic exercise you can do when you can't walk without crutches...? Thanks!

Crutches are really good exercise - go for a half hour walk and you'll feel like you've done a proper workout, as you're not used to using these muscles for cardio.

Apart from that you could work on strength and toning exercises like sit-ups, press-ups, leg lifts and weights machines in the gym. Weights in particular gets your heart rate up more than you'd expect, and really improves your stamina for cardio stuff - you'll notice it when you get back to your routine in 6 weeks or so. (Olympic runners do weight training as it is so effective in improving overall performance)

Hope this helps

Is it possible you broke your foot due to the strain of the type of exercising you were doing? I see more people with "exercise" related injuries.

There are plenty of stretching exercises you can do, while holding a countertop for balance. One type is a sit-up version but you are pushing yourself back and forth to the counter. Another is the stretching exercise for your back and arms, add in small weights.

Can you go swimming? With a kickboard, you'll be able to use lots of muscles and not strain the broken leg.

I'm not sure 6 weeks with the cast is really anything to worry about. There are sitting and reclining exercises you can do. But don't strain the other leg as it compensates. Take it easy, your body needs the rest...

Do laps (swim or walk) at the local pool.
When you can't get to the pool you can use bungee exercise tubes. The set of tubes I have use straps for the ankles (leg exercises) and handles (arms/body). The ankle strap might put too much stress on your ankle of your broken foot so I would be hesitant to recommend them for leg exercises until your foot is healed up. You can use these tubes w/ handles attached to work your arms, back, shoulders, and stomach. You won't get an aerobic workout with these tubes since it is resistance training but you will exercise your muscles.

I think the best exercise for a broken foot is to go to a swimming pool. This way your body weight won't put too much pressure on your foot. You can walk, run, and swim without hurt your foot.

I think that swimming is going to be your best bet for aerobic activity. So that you don't have to really point your foot a lot (which could cause significant pain) I would suggest swimming the side stroke, since that puts less stress on your feet.

another thing that you may want to try are those hydraulic resistance machines (like they have at Curves), it doesn't have a lot of resistance on them, so you can move them faster, which will provide a combination of cardio and weight training.

Take it easy on your foot though, if you strain it while it's already broken, it could put you out of commission for even longer, which will suck even more.

Good luck!

Ask your doctor if you could use a rowing machine would work--I don't know your condition.
Also, ask if you can walk (using the crutches for 10-15 minutes a day. It'll make be weird but it's still moving around.

do sit ups, pull ups, planks and lift weights everyday. You will continue to burn calories even hours after you stop!
