Jesus have used his free will. That is the reason why he died a gruesome death. Have you seen the Heroes of the Old Testament suffered when they died? From Jacob down to Solomon, all of them made mistake and yet they were forgiven and they did not die the way Jesus did. He is just suppose to have come for the lost sheeps of Israel. Meaning he has to bring them back to the fold of God of Israel. Like Moses who brought them out of Egypt, Jesus was expected to bring them out of Rome and yet what he did is broke God's law by by working on a Sabbath Day and even claimed himself as the Lord of Sabbath. Then He called himself Son of God as in he claimed to be .of divine origin which for the Jews is blasphemy.
Adam was called Son of God (see Genealogy of Jesus in Luke) because he was chosen as the first man of the Jewish nation (contrary to the teachings that he was the first man of the earth). Not of divine origin but purely by choice for God's own purpose.
Read Samuel 7:13-17 and 1Chronicle 22:10 So you will know how one is called a Son of God and the punishment for the chosen one who did not obey His command. See why Jesus was punished with the rod of his own men.

Yes, but only if He wasn't totally surrendered to the will of the Father, so no because He exists in perfect unison with the Father and the Spirit and He acts in perfect submission to the will of the Father. He is perfect in His nature and cannot sin against His own nature, and yet He was tempted by Satan in the desert--there is no temptation if He could not have chosen to sin out of His flesh, His human side, so then, yes.

If Jesus had asserted his own "rights" and had not submitted to the will of the Father and died for us, we would be eternally lost. He was, and is, our only hope.

Interesting question.

If we believe that Jesus was in-fact God in the form of man as Christians do, then he has free-will. Therefore, he did indeed have the option of not dying on the cross. However, he foreknew his Father's plan for his death as he eluded to with his disciples in the garden. So, he went freely.

Had he not chosen to die, then (according to Christian Theology) our sins would not be forgiven and we would still be subject to eternal suffering upon death.

Yes He could have. That was His choice to make. He asked God the Father to change it but only IF it was His will. Jesus knew that was why He came but being God He also knew there was no greater suffering EVER then to take on the SIN OF THE WORLD.
And yet He did it.
For us.

Jesus could have chosen not to die. The fact that he suffered and died for US was proof of His love. Who else would do this........

he was SENT here to die for our sins.
And he did have a choice, in the garden of Gethsemane (sp?) he once prayed as asked GOD to "let this cup pass from me" meaning he prayed to let the suffering go by him. But then said " not my will but thine be done", meaning he was sent to do what he (GOD) wanted him to do not because of what he (Jesus) wanted.
there is so much more to this but, I just gave you a short answer.
Pretty sure another christian will best me with a better explanation.

Jesus died on the cross for our sins because he loves us so much that he had to die on the cross for us.

yes...he too has free will. He knew what his mission was, so if he'd have gone against what he he was here to do...he wouldnt of ascended to heaven and he wouldnt of reached enlightenment, so who knows. Maybe he'd be stuck here on earth with all the other lost souls trying to find his way...
