Sometimes 'environment' seems like a luxury to developing countries. But stories such as desertification in north-western China (affecting not only farmers but also the dust-storms in Beijing) and city pollution in India shows it ain't.

Chile has I believe been pretty good at laws to protect miners and the land from excessive pollution from copper mining.

Environment protection can be done and it is usually the poor who benefit most when it is done.
