Since I do not know the application, I will only say that certain types of clutches hold better than a brake. For example an overrunning clutch has the holding power much greater than a disc or ratchet type brake. Overrunning clutches are used for example on heavy duty coal mine conveyors to keep the coal from slipping back into the mine if there is a power failure to the beltline.

Downshifting works well. (Using the mechanical resistance of the spinning motor to slow the car.) Unlike previously advertised....you won't break your "enjin", it will just spin a little faster than normal. As long as the RPM doesn't exceed the engines "red line" it should do little harm. Slow the car by downshifting through all of the cars gears one at a time allowing the car to slow between shifts. If this wasn't enough I would start sideswiping parked cars to lose forward velocity. When the car was slowed as much as possible in first gear I would simply turn off the car's ignition. Depending on how steep the hill was you might stop...nevertheless at least its an attempt at stopping...alternatively you could floor the accelerator to minimize pain and suffering or just make a call on your cell phone and ask for some assistance. Anyway you look at it screaming like a baby will add bonus points.

On a car?

Engine braking. It's not going to stop the vehicle effectively but it can be used in certain situations to slow the vehicle down.

Looking around my car I found three types of brakes;

1.Hydraulic foot brake.

2.Mechanical hand brake.

3.Engine brake, shift into second, then first (this will cause no problems) but will not bring you to a total stop. Do not turn off your ignition this will lock your steering!

Good luck and tell me where you drive please?

Your question is meaningless.Any arrangement to stop some thing from motion is a break.Even alternative for the break is a break.The question should be like alternative for manual break ,Mechanical break,Hydraulic break etc.

If its an emergency drop a gear to 3rd or or 2nd. The enjin will be broken but look at the bright side you stoped.
