When any two orgainsms share the same environment, who have similar needs in terms of food, water, mates, etc leads to competiton , when the number of such organisms is more and the respurce is in short supply the competition becomes more intense. For eg competition for suitable nesting sites in bird, for minerals in both plants and animals, for light in plants. This competiton exists among members of similar species called Intraspecific competition and among members of different species called Interspecific competition
Competition results in a reduction in breeding success for one or other organism(s). Because of this it is one of the most important aspects of natural selection, which may result in evolutionary change if the environment is changing. Competition also results in the distribution of organisms we see in habitats. It is believed that organisms tend to occur where the pressures of competition are not as great as in other areas.

Intraspecific competition: When individuals within the same species affect the growth and reproduction of other members of that species by sharing limited resources.
Two or more consumers may compete for a limited resource. If the consumers are of the same species then intraspecific competition is said to occur. Intraspecific competition can be for nest sites, mates, or food. The results of intraspecific competition leads to density dependent birth and death rates (as density goes up, the birth rates drop while death rates increase).

If the consumers are different species, then interspecific competition is said to occur. Under these conditions, the birth and death rates of one population affect these rates in the second population. While intraspecific competition results in regulation of the specie's population, interspecific competition can result in one species dominating the other, even to the point where the second species will go extinct.

It means competition between individuals of the same species for the same resource e.g. food, water, mates, etc.

In mammals, this tendency gets stronger, the more distantly related the individuals are (i.e. family units will tend to cooperate, but unrelated individuals will tend to challenge each other).
