The Grand am is not a very fun car to drive in my experience. I have driven that car on one of my business trips. It responded sluggishly when you really need the acceleration to be there and it has poor handling in the corners.

The Eclipse is a bit more sporty, has tighter suspension which means that is corners better but that also means is has a more bumpy ride at lower speeds. The Eclipse also looks better both in its stock mode or if you were planning on putting some money into it by changing out the front end for a more sporty look like a lot of racers do.

There is also the fact that as a general rule Japanese makes generally hold up better with more miles than American made cars, that alone would make me go with the Mitsubishi line.
