I have wood paneling in the kitchen. I'd like to stain it with red to make it look like old weathered barn siding.

From the sounds of it, you have a little work cut out for you to get a decent looking finish. I would recommend lightly sanding the surface with a fine sand paper to remove the varnish coating. When most of the varnish is removed, white wash the wood using a 50/50 mix of bleach and water to lighten the wood and remove any dust. When the wood is dry, use a high quality wood finish like Cuprinol Redwood stain. You can re-wash the wall to get that lighter if needed. Once you get the desired color combination, I would recommend using a matte varnish to protect the wood from stains.

We did it and it looks great. Here is the update on painting wood paneling: On HGTV they mentioned that a lot of people have bought or have houses with wood paneling and want to know if painting it is an acceptable option. They said yes and they do it on TV all the time. The real answer is--will you like how it looks. Some people fill in the grooves and some people place special wallpaper liner over it and paint. It's up to you what look you want.

to change anything from a dark brown you will have to prime it white first. Kilz it and then check the edges and such for small depressions that show up dark. put a little caulk in the dark spots. let it dry then hit it with some more kilz. I had to do mine twice to cover the brown. When your at that stage you will have what looks like white washed boards. So then either paint or do a faux finish of choice.
